Just This Once

I don’t know why I feel invigorated with Nico Vitale.

He’s attractive and decisive, and he is so smooth in everything he does, even something as simple as unbuttoning his shirt. He flicks them off one by one, pacing slowly through the length of my living room.

There’s a million things I want to ask about Marcus Conway, but the mere idea of saying his name would kill the wave of enticement that I want to ride right now. It wouldn’t be the only thing I would want to ride, but I steer away from those thoughts, certain Nico can read my blushing face as permission—or as a sturdy invite.

His eyes pull over his shoulder while he peels out of his shirt, exposing the tattoos that trail over his ribs and leak into his back muscles, each one more well defined than the other.

“Than—Thanks,” I stutter, failing at trying to sound confident. “Thank you for protecting me today, Nico. If you weren’t there, then he would have taken me and there’s no telling what he would have done.”

“He wouldn’t dare try again, Princess. I know that for a fact. He’s petrified of Heston and besides, I’ll shoot him if he ever even comes close to you again.”

It’s a sweet sentiment, albeit morbid in some ways, but having him be so precise in his determination, so firm and strict with his thoughts and plans and words . . . it only makes him hotter in my eyes. I’ve never been so attracted to a powerful man in my life, let alone one I know I shouldn’t be.

“It’s getting late,” he hums, undoing his belt so simply, so casually, it’s like he can’t see that everything he is doing right now is engulfing me in dirty, unspoken desires. “Go get into something comfortable and we can watch a movie in the living room tonight.”

I nod, wanting to protest, but then a better plan strikes me. I’ve never been super confident, especially with the scar on my back, but I retreat into my bathroom and lock the door, taking off my clothes as fast as possible.

I hesitate, looking over my body carefully, seeing every curve and trying to determine if it’s attractive or not. I know he’s seen it before, but this time is going to be different.

Not even a phone call from my father will stop me.

Looking at my pajamas on the nightstand, I walk out of the bathroom and make a straight line right past them, stopping in the doorway with my hair falling right over my shoulders. My breasts are cold, and my nipples are erect to prove it, but I pinch my thighs together, lean on the frame of the door, and wait.

A single second with his back turned to the sight of me feels like seven years.

I’m nearing a hundred years old when he finally steps back, his eyes glancing up the sight of me, as if by accident, but they don’t leave—not for a moment.
